White Rim Trail

Utah is one of my favorite places in this entire world. The varied landscape, the people, and outdoor culture bring us back just about every year. This year we traveled to Moab, UT, to what can be called an offroader’s paradise. So do yourself a favor, go buy a TOYOTA and come play here. I kid the Jeepers, I mean who wouldn't want that Fiat Renegade! Dark Knight Edition! Driving through town, you'll see the biggest, baddest rigs around, and there are no mall crawlers here; Everyone wheels up some crazy stuff.

Years ago, I saw an article about this backcountry road called the White Rim Trail and promised myself that one day, I'd do it. It is a 72.2 mile "road" that traverses the backcountry of Canyonlands National Park, and brings its visitors to some of the most awe inspiring views in what I would argue, the country. We did it with the following:

Vehicle: 2016 Toyota 4Runner Trail Premium
Modifications: Icon Vehicle Dynamics Stage 2 Tubular Kit, 275/70-17 BF K02 Tires, Removed Steps
Tire Pressure: 28 PSI

I recommend doing this trail over a minimum of two days and with a vehicle that you know and trust - A tow would be mind blowingly expensive if you happened to break down. We spent two days winding through the desert, descending down the Shaffer Switchbacks, camping at Murphy A(Highly Recommended), then ascending through the Mineral Switchbacks.  The road was in great condition except for the Green River flooding at the last part of the trail, we had to cross about two and half feet of water to avoid turning around; Thankfully, we ran into another group who were able to point out the safest route and we didn't swamp the engine.

I would be no means call this a highly technical trail, but it is very bumpy, long, and there are many times you'll find yourself near drop offs that make you question your sanity. From the moment you turn off the main road, you're hit with how vast Canyonlands really is, your head snaps from side to side, getting lost in the amazement of how small you are in the world. There's a good rim for a photo op before heading down the Shafer Switchbacks, we saw all kinds of vehicles from minivans to sedans that braved the trip to go the few miles their cars could make it. But get down to the bottom and drive a few miles, stop at the next overlook, get out of the car, and listen to how quiet it is, and how large all the formations are, and how epic this trip is going to be. I won't spoil your adventure by revealing too much - the road is easy to follow, bring extra gas, charge up your camera and I promise that you'll have a great time. Feel free to ask any questions in the comments!
